The area was historically used as a mangrove patch and formed part of the Intracoastal Waterway up until it was modified into an artificial canal. Subsequently, the county decided to turn this place into a marina and connected it with an additional 92 acres of natural reserve on its west side through a footbridge. The Boardwalk for this park was opened to the public in April 2011, which extends up to 1.2 miles and is adjacent to the Marriott Boca Raton Hotel & Resort.
